Study led by Duncan FitzGerald of Boston University, and co-authored by Plum Island Research Project principal investigator Peter Rosen, of the barrier islands on New England. A discussion of the barriers of the Merrimack Embayment can be found starting on p. 344 (p. 40 of the pdf). An early model for the formation of the barrier chain is given in Figure 8.33 (p. 347 [p. 43 of the pdf]).
